A new containership, the FESCO Altai, has joined the fleet of Russia's Far Eastern shipping company (FESC), according to Itar-Tass news agency.
The ship, which has been named in honour of a dry cargo vessel that plied the seas under the Soviet flag from 1928 to 1946, brings to 28 the total number of vessels in the company's fleet with a total capacity of 30,000 TEU and an aggregate deadweight tonnage of 1.1 million. With the commissioning of the FESCO Altai, FESC's total container capacity has increased by 61 per cent since the beginning of 2006.
The new containership is the fourth and last in a series of ships built for the Russian merchant marine at the Chinese Jingling shipyards, according to FESC press secretary Veronika Kazakova who was quoted in the report. Each of the new ships in the series has a capacity of 1,080 TEU.
