Ocean Carrier Rate Revision Roundup for Sept. 20

Major container lines have announced planned rate increases for a variety of trades, as detailed below, slated to take effect in September and October.

North America-Europe

Effective Oct. 1, Hapag-Lloyd is planning to boost rates between North America and Europe. From Canada, the U.S. and Mexico to North Europe and the Mediterranean, the hike will be $50 per 20-foot container and $75 per 40-foot container. In the other direction, the increase will be $150 per 20-foot container and $200 per 40-foot container.

Hamburg Süd will attempt to raise rates on its trade from the west coast ports of the U.S. and Canada to the Mediterranean and North Europe, starting Oct. 16. The increase will be $100 per 20-foot container and $150 per 40-foot container.

Europe-Africa

Hapag-Lloyd aims to raise rates for all refrigerated cargo from North Europe to West Africa by €100 per container as of Oct. 15.

North America-South America

Effective Oct. 15, Hamburg Süd is looking to increase rates on southbound cargo moving from or via U.S. East and Gulf Coast ports to the west coast of South America and Colombia by $100 per 20-foot container and $200 per 40-foot container.

Asia-South America

Hapag-Lloyd will attempt to increase rates for shipments from the Indian subcontinent to Mexico, Central America, the west coast of South America, the Caribbean and Panama by $250 per TEU, effective Oct. 1.

Intra-Asia

Maersk Line plans to implement a rate increase on Oct. 15 on its trade from the Far East to the Red Sea, including Jordan, Yemen and Saudi Arabia, and the Horn of Africa, including Djibouti and Ethiopia. The hike will be $250 per 20-foot container and $500 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container.

On the same day, the container line will also try to raise rates from the Far East to Sudan by €187 per 20-foot container and €377 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container.

Asia-Europe

Maersk Line has announced a minimum increase of $600 per TEU and $1,200 per FEU for cargo moving from Far East Asia, excluding Japan, to North Europe and the Mediterranean, effective Nov. 1. As noted in a previous story, the carrier said it may try for an even larger increase.
