Major container lines have announced planned rate increases for a variety of trades, as detailed below, slated to take effect in December and January.
Asia-Europe
Maersk Line plans to increase rates on services from the Far East, excluding Japan, to Europe, excluding Syria, by $750 per 20-foot-equivalent unit, effective Dec. 15. For shipments to Syria, the hike will be 575 euros (about $779).
Trans-Pacific
Hapag-Lloyd plans to implement a rate increase in the trade from East Asia to the U.S. and Canada.
- Effective Dec. 20, the hike for shipments to the U.S. West Coast and British Columbia, including Vancouver, as well as cargo to U.S. East Coast ports, interior points intermodal and reverse inland points intermodal; Toronto, Montreal, Halifax and all other Canadian inland points, will be $160 per 20-foot container, $200 per 40-foot container, $225 per 40-foot high-cube container and $253 per 45-foot container.
- Starting Jan. 15, the hike for shipments to the same locations will be $240 per 20-foot container, $300 per 40-footer, $338 per 40-foot high-cube container and $380 per 45-foot container.
Asia-Africa
Maersk aims to boost rates on its trade from Samoa, Tonga and Cook Islands to and from East Africa, the Far East, Indian Ocean islands, Oceania, Southern Africa, Swaziland, West Africa and Pacific Ocean islands, effective Dec. 1. The increase will be $1,000 per 20-foot container and $2,000 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container. For shipments from Samoa, Tonga and Cook Islands to and from Sudan, the increase will be $750 per 20-foot container and $1,500 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container.
CMA CGM intends to raise rates on cargo from Asia to West Africa by $150 per TEU, effective Dec. 15.
Asia-South America
Two carriers intend to implement rate increases in the trade from Asia to South America’s east coast, effective Dec. 1:
- Cosco Container Lines plans to increase rates by $650 per 20-foot container and $1,300 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container.
- Mediterranean Shipping Co. will attempt to increase rates by $750 per 20-foot container and $1,500 per 40-foot container.
Hamburg Süd and Alianca also aim to hike rates in the same trade lane by $500 per 20-foot container and $1,000 per 40-foot, 40-foot high-cube, 40-foot non-operated refrigerated and 40-foot reefer container, effective Dec. 3.
Intra-Asia
Cosco plans to boost rates on cargo from the Far East to the Red Sea by $200 per TEU, starting Dec. 1 and Dec. 15, and $300 per TEU, effective Jan. 1.
It also hopes to increase rates on its eastbound trade from the Far East and Indian subcontinent to the U.S.:
- Starting Dec. 20, the increase will be $160 per 20-foot container, $200 per 40-foot container, $225 per 40-foot high-cube container and $253 per 45-foot container.
- Effective Jan. 15, the increase will be $240 per 20-foot container, $300 per 40-foot container, $338 per 40-foot high-cube container and $380 per 45-foot container.
