Maersk: New intra-America shipping company will use SeaLand name

1/9/2014 9:34:36 AM

Maersk Line said it is creating a regional containerized shipping company for the intra-America trade that will use the name SeaLand.

The new affiliate will have a structure similar to Maersk’s other regional carriers, which include MCC Transport on intra-Asia trades and Seago on intra-Europe routes.

Maersk said it will transition its intra-America business to SeaLand in a phased approach throughout 2014 and that the new, independent unit will officially commence operations on Jan. 1, 2015.

With the new unit, Maersk is reviving one of the most storied names in shipping. Malcom P.  McLean, the trucking company executive who founded the container shipping industry, created Sea-Land Service in 1960 out of Pan-Atlantic Steamship Company, which he had acquired in 1955.

Maersk acquired Sea-Land in 1999 from the railroad CSX.
