PSA announces new developments in Pakistan, Vietnam and Brunei

2/9/2007 4:06:49 PM

PSA has signed an agreement to operate Gwadar Port, SP-PSA has been granted an investment licence to develop a new port in Vietnam, and PSA Muara has decided to hand the operations at Muara Container Terminal (MCT) back to the Brunei government.

PSA Gwadar has signed a 40-year concession agreement with the Gwadar Port Authority to operate a multi-purpose and container terminal located in the western province of Balochistan in Pakistan.

Gwadar will be an important and significant addition to PSA’s global network of deep sea ports across Asia and Europe. The current trend towards larger mega-ships is especially significant to Gwadar as shipping lines look for deeper harbours from which to hub and feed.

Gwadar Port has significant room for expansion to cope with growth in demand. The current terminal is capable of handling both conventional and containerised cargo.

PSA will work to link Gwadar to its network of deep sea ports. The terminal is expected to be operational in Q2 2007.

SP-PSA International Port Co – a joint venture between Saigon Port and PSA Vietnam – has been granted an investment licence to develop a new container port project in the Vung Tau province in Vietnam, which will serve the fast growing container traffic of Vietnam and become a major hub for Indochina.

This is PSA’s first port project in Vietnam.

Strategically located near the mouth of the Cai Mep-Thi Vai river, SP-PSA will be equipped to handle large vessels at its deep water berths. It will be connected by an extensive road and inland waterway network to Ho Chi Minh City and the rest of the South Vietnam industrial hinterland.

The terminal will be developed in two phases, with first phase becoming operational in 2009. When both phases come onstream, the terminal will have a projected annual capacity of 2 million TEU.

After managing and operating the Muara Container Terminal (MTC) for the past six years, PSA Muara Container Terminal has decided to hand the operations at MCT back to the Brunei government, effective April 1, 2007.

During the six-year period of close working partnership, PSA Muara achieved the objectives of transferring operational knowledge and expertise to the Brunei Ports Dept and training local port managers and workers to operate MCT efficiently and professionally.
