Lufthansa Cargo is to establish separate business units for its special freight segments - live animals, valuable cargo, airmail and temperature-sensitive goods.
The carrier will set up separate Competence Centres for each segment, giving customers access to specialist teams who will support them along the entire value-added chain of these special products.
In the airmail segment, the bulk of Lufthansa Cargo’s mail business is transacted via the Airmail Centre Frankfurt (ACF), in which the cargo airline has a 40% stake. In 2006, the Lufthansa cargo subsidiary transported more than 40,000 tonnes of airmail worldwide for about 200 postal companies.
Director Martina Görgen will head the new Airmail Competence Centre.
Each year, Lufthansa Cargo carries thousands of live animals in special containers aboard its MD-11 freighters and in the bellies of Lufthansa’s passenger aircraft. In addition to live bait, ornamental fish and chicks, Lufthansa Cargo transports more than 10,000 household pets and 1,300 horses every year.
From 2008, these will be taken care of at a new animal station, which is currently being built near Gate 26. This facility at CargoCity North will be the most modern of its kind at any airport in Europe, and will house all the departments responsible for animal transport that are currently spread around the Frankfurt Airport site.
Director Axel Heitmann will head the new Animals Competence Centre.
Lufthansa Cargo handles temperature-sensitive goods, including high-grade pharmaceutical products such as insulin, vaccines and biotechnology products, which are transported primarily in special refrigerated containers that have to meet the highest quality standards.
Director Frank Beilner will head the new Temperature Control Competence Centre.
In terms of transporting valuable cargo, security is the uppermost priority. From the time of acceptance through to the time of delivery at the destination, bank notes, diamonds, gold bullion and art treasures are under constant guard by Lufthansa Cargo’s security staff.
Director Dieter Schorn will head the new Valuables Competence Centre.
