Irish port victim of erosion

1/21/2009 10:29:41 AM

Fenit Port in Ireland is at serious risk from coastal erosion, with harbour Master Michael O'Carroll contacting Kerry County Council about the situation, warning that time is running out as the sea continues to eat into the main road leading to the port, the Kerryman reported.

"We're at the stage where if traffic to the port increases any further, a bad Southwest storm and heavy rain could do the damage," O'Carroll said.

At one point on the road, within a half kilometre from the port, the sealine is just one metre from the road verge.

But the consequences of a collapsed road at Fenit could have far-reaching economic consequences. Liebherr container cranes, based in Killarney, use Fenit Port as their only export point from Kerry.

Last year, the company moved 22 cranes out of the county through Fenit, a total of over 800 shipments. Closure of access to the port could spell disaster for the company that provides hundreds of jobs and is tied into manufacturing and delivery contracts all over the world.
