The first mainline container vessel of the season called at New Mangalore Port this week, the Hindu Business Line reported.
P Tamilvanan, chairman of New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), told Business Line that the mainline container vessel with 185 TEUs of raw cashew containers sailed directly from Port of Matwara in East Africa to New Mangalore.
Stating that some more mainline container vessels are likely to call at New Mangalore Port in the coming days, he said the efforts of the port in bringing mainline container vessels is bearing fruits now.
K Prakash Rao, one of the importers of raw cashew cargo from East Africa, said that the cargo reached New Mangalore on the seventh day of its sailing from Matwara.
The reduction in transport time has put the Karnataka cashew processors in an advantageous position, he said.
