SOMALI pirates wounded two seafarers on board the North Korean general cargo ship Chong Chon Gang in an unsuccessful hijacking attempt. The attack on the 1977-built, 9,147gt ship took place about 400 nautical miles off the Kenya coast. The location appears to indicate an attempt to evade the patrolling warships which are concentrated in the Gulf of Aden.
On Tuesday a Japanese-managed bulk carrier was attacked some 550 nm off the east coast of Somalia, again away from the most heavily patrolled areas. The ICC International Maritime Bureau (IMB) says that the pirates chased the vessel and opened fire with small arms. The ship made evasive manoeuvres and escaped the attack.
Meanwhile on the other side of Africa, at Lagos anchorage, Nigeria the IMB reports that pirates armed with guns, knives and iron rods boarded a chemical tanker at anchor.
