There are now eight services opting to sail around the tip of Africa rather than transiting the Suez and Panama canals, according to research from ComPairData.
Six current services do so:
• Evergreen Line and Maersk Line’s CEM service between Asia, northern Europe and the Mediterranean.
• Maersk/Safmarine’s TP6/AE 6 service between Asia and the Mediterranean.
• Maersk/Safmarine’s AE 7 service between Asia and northern Europe and the Mediterranean.
• Grand Alliance/APL/Hyundai/Zim’s EU3 service between Asia and northern Europe.
• MSC’s Lion Service between Asia and northern Europe. The MSC service bypasses the Suez Canal in both directions.
• Maersk's Samba service between the East Coast of South America and the Middle East.
Two services are scheduled to sail around the Cape of Good Hope soon:
• CMA CGM and China Shipping’s PEX 2/AAE service between Asia, the Caribbean, and the North Coast of South America, which will return to Asia via the Cape of Good Hope.
• Maersk and CMA CGM’s new Columbus joint long-line loop, connecting the U.S. East Coast with Asia via the Cape, then to the Pacific Northwest, then back to Asia and back to the U.S. East Coast but via the Suez on this leg.
