French carrier CMA CGM will join Mediterranean Shipping Company as a vessel operator in a trans-Atlantic loop at the end of September in an effort to match capacity to dwindling demand.
CMA CGM was cooperating with Evergreen and China Shipping in a joint service from North Europe to South Atlantic, Mexico and the U.S. Gulf. The Asian partners withdrew from the trade as demand fell 20 percent since the beginning of the year, CMA CGM said.
The previous service was operated with five vessels of 3,000 20-foot equivalent units. MSC’s larger service will have seven vessels of 5,700 to 6,000 TEUs, once CMA CGM joins.
The new rotation will be Antwerp - Felixstowe - Bremerhaven - Le Havre - Charleston - Savannah - Freeport - Vera Cruz - Altamira - Houston - New Orleans - Freeport - Savannah - Charleston – Antwerp.
