New winter timetable features many new services

10/25/2007 10:48:50 AM

Munich Airport now boasts nonstop services to 46 attractive intercontinental destinations.

October 28, 2007, marks the start of the new winter timetable at Munich Airport. Airlines have booked slots for more than 172,000 take offs and landings for the period up to March 29, 2008 – an increase of approximately 2 percent as compared with last winter’s timetable. During the upcoming winter season, 91 airlines will be operating services from Munich Airport to 196 destinations in 67 countries.

Passengers in Munich will have an extensive range of attractive intercontinental destinations to choose from this winter, including 46 cities in Africa, North America and Asia that can be reached quickly and conveniently without changing planes.

Some airlines are again adding new long-haul destinations or beefing up existing services in this segment in time for the winter period: With the addition of another weekly flight, South African Airways will now fly four times a week from Munich to Johannesburg. Air Mauritius is doubling the opportunities for sun lovers to reach the enchanting beaches of Mauritius by increasing its weekly departures from one to two. TACV Cabo Verde is adding a second weekly connection to the island Sal in the Cape Verde Islands. LTU is now offering a third weekly service to Phuket, the popular Thai holiday spot. Like last winter, Lufthansa will depart every day for Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The start of the winter season will also bring a substantial increase in the number of seats available for travelers to New York, with Lufthansa now operating its Newark flights with a widebody Airbus A330 and upgrading the route to a daily service.

In the continental segment, Air Berlin is leading the way with the addition of destinations and frequencies. For the first time, Air Berlin will be flying to the European metropolises of London and Milan (with two daily flights to each city). It will also be offering a twice-daily service to Vienna in cooperation with Air Niki. A new Lufthansa destination is the Romanian city of Sibiu, which will be served with a daily flight. Two flights a day operated by Tarom will depart from Munich to the Romanian capital, Bucharest, instead of a single daily flight as before. Norwegian Air Shuttle is launching a new service connecting Munich to Warsaw four times a week. Starting in December, airBaltic will double its departure frequencies to Riga and Vilnius. Touching down in Munich as a newcomer this winter is the Russian airline Transaero, which will operate a weekly flight to St. Petersburg.

Low-cost carrier, germanwings, has also added new destinations and extra flights at Munich this winter. The budget airline is now flying from Munich to Dortmund, operating three daily flights right from the start. The carrier is also increasing the frequency of its services to Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne/Bonn.

Heading the list of German cities served by the most flights from Munich Airport are Hamburg and Berlin. Paris heads the list of frequently served foreign cities.
