Maersk halves its Kaohsiung operations

7/11/2008 10:26:15 AM

Maersk will not renew the leases on two docks in Kaohsiung when the contract expires at the end of October, a further blow to the beleagured Taiwan port.

Maersk has been steadily moving its volumes to China's Xiamen port following the completion of three container docks there in 2007, a joint venture between the Xiamen Harbor Bureau and Maersk.

The Danish shipping company will still lease two terminals in Kaohsiung.

Kaohsiung has slipped to number eight in the world container port rankings.
