Increase backlog fees are being imposed on import and export companies by shipping companies as a way to reduce the losses they are suffering while ships wait at ports to clear formalities and load and unload their goods, Thai News Service reports.
The port backlog prevents the shipping companies from fulfilling their contractual obligations and having to compensate for not delivering the goods as scheduled.
Taiwan's Wan Hai Lines was the first company to apply the new fee.
One South Korean shipping firm said that a container ship now took between 20 to 25 days to travel from South Korea to Vietnam, whereas it use to take a mere 10 days.
