Ships face trouble in Viet waters

8/15/2008 10:33:55 AM

The construction of the Phu My Bridge project across the Saigon River is expected to disrupt the movements of ships into Ho Chi Minh City for nearly one year, the Saigon Times Daily reported.

It has been estimated that one-third of cargo ships and two-thirds of cargo bound for seaports in Ho Chi Minh City will be affected.

This final stage of the bridge building will involve the installing of cables. Cat Lai Port will not be affected by this obstruction, which will last from September 26 this year to July 31 next year.

Last year approximately 72 million tonnes of cargo landed at the ports, which would mean a loss of around 40 million tonnes of import and export cargo over the next 12 months.
