Shipping companies at Ho Chi Minh Port have stressed they would continue to impose port congestion fees due to lengthy ship handling times, despite a call from local authorities to review the fees, the Saigon Times Daily reported.
The shipping lines have stated that as long as the congestion continues, they would collect the charges from local exporters to offset their own costs.
The government has asked the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry to work with associations of foreign ship owners in an attempt to negotiate the congestion fee.
The majority of ships are stuck at the port from anywhere between one and three additional days due to poor handling capacity, making it impossible to accurately predict cargo delivery dates.
