Manchester Airport is gearing up for the busiest day of the year when tens of thousands of Manchester United fans head to Rome for the UEFA Champions League final.
The Airport is expecting upwards of 20,000 additional passengers to fly to show their team some support on the 26 and 27 May when they play FC Barcelona.
This equates to 44 additional flights and will give a substantial boost to overall passenger numbers for the period, plus significant increases in retail sales.
Extra staff will be on shift to help ensure the Manchester United fans’ journey through the airport is as easy as possible.
Manchester Airport Managing Director Andrew Cornish said: “The whole airport is gearing up for a very busy period with extra volume of football flights and staff and senior managers across the business have been working very hard operationally. It’s obviously great news for Manchester United that they’ve reached the final but it’s also excellent news for Manchester Airport and for the region as a whole.
“We are expecting to be very busy as the fans fly in and out and we will, of course, bring in extra staff to help speed the fans through as efficiently as possible. We will be working closely with the airlines over the next days to meet the demand for flights and are committed to making the fans’ journey as simple and enjoyable as possible.”
