The Taiwan government plans to invest US$8.6 billion to upgrade its busiest international airport and add a third runway and terminal, after years of neglect, Transportation and Communications Deputy Minister Yeh Kuang-shih said.
"These new plans are very important for our international competitiveness," Yeh told Dow Jones Newswires. "Taiwan is an island, so it is crucial we use the airport to drive Taiwan's economy."
The plans include the construction of a third terminal, a third 4,000m runway to accommodate larger aircraft like the Airbus A380, and a direct-rail link to Taipei, Yeh said. Construction has already begun on the rail link.
Beyond updating antiquated facilities, the improvements will enable the airport to handle the increasing number of passengers who travel through the airport, Yeh said.
