ECU-LINE NV Antwerp has started offering an alternative service to Sydney and Melbourne with transshipment via Singapore from the beginning of November 2006.
The new service is being operated alongside its traditional weekly direct services to Australia, which will maintain their present schedule, in a bid to offer a more cost-effective service to freight forwarders and shippers.
A statement from the Belgium shipping line said the transit time via Singapore to the Australian ports of Sydney and Melbourne is 35 days out of Antwerp. This compares to transit times of 28 days to Melbourne and 30 days to Sydney on its concurrent direct services.
In addition, Ecu-Line Antwerp provides fortnightly direct service to Adelaide, Brisbane and Fremantle. Its network via the transshipment port of Melbourne also covers Hobart, Tasmania.
Ecu-Line has its own offices in Melbourne and Sydney. Out of both locations, as well as from Brisbane, Ecu-Line Australia offers direct fortnightly LCL services to Antwerp, with a transit time of 39 days, the release added.
