THE Chinese city of Suzhou in Jiangsu province plans to invest CNY13 billion (US$1.66 billion) to expand Taicang port by the end of the decade.
The plan is to turn Taicang into the largest river container port in China and an important supporting facility for the Shanghai International Shipping Centre, said a report in The Suzhou Daily.
This is intended to be achieved through the construction of 28 new berths. Out of the total investment, CNY9 billion will be used to develop the container terminal's third, fourth and fifth phases, which will include 12 containers berths with a container handling capacity of 5.4 million TEU, the report said.
With the new berths, Taicang port will have 20 container berths that will collectively be able to handle more than nine million TEU annually.
Taicang port now has 33 berths for handling various kinds of commodities including ore, chemicals, coal and containers, the report added.
