8/28/2013 8:46:09 AM

Hamburg Süd has christened a ship in the U.S. for the first time in the company’s history.

The container ship Cap Corrientes was christened Aug. 23 in the Port of San Francisco. The ship’s sponsor was Ofelia Gallo, wife of Joseph E. Gallo, president and CEO of the E.&J. Gallo Winery in Modesto, Calif. Also in attendance were Heino Schmidt, member of the executive board of Hamburg Süd, and Alexander Oetker, representing the Oetker family.

The 3,800-TEU container ship was built by Taizhou Catic Shipbuilding Heavy Industry in China for Vilmaris Management GmbH of Hamburg, Germany. It is on a long-term charter with Hamburg Süd, which has deployed the vessel in the liner trade between the Pacific Coast and Australia-New Zealand.

The Cap Corrientes is the third Hamburg Süd ship to carry this name. The 228-meter-long, 37.3-meter-wide vessel has 500 reefer plugs for transporting cargo such as meat, fruit and vegetables from Australia to the U.S. and citrus fruits from Southern California on the return voyage. It has a maximum draft of 12.5 meters.
