Ocean Carrier Rate Revision Roundup for Sept. 6

9/9/2013 10:11:18 AM

Major container lines have announced rate increases for a variety of trades, as detailed below, slated to take effect in September and October:

Trans-Atlantic

Four carriers plan to implement rate hikes on Oct. 1:

  • NYK Line will boost rates on its eastbound trade from U.S. ports to Northern Europe. For dry cargo, except dried nuts and fruit moving via West Coast ports, the hike will be $80 per 20-foot container and $100 per 40-foot, 40-foot high-cube and 45-foot container. For dried nuts and fruit moving via West Coast ports, the increase will be $200 per 20-foot container and $300 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container.
  • Evergreen Line will increase eastbound and westbound rates on its trans-Atlantic rates for all commodities. For westbound rates, the hike will be $150 per 20-foot container and $250 per 40-foot container. For eastbound rates, the increase will be $150 per 20-foot container and $200 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container.
  • CMA CGM will raise rates on its trade from Europe to the North America. From North Europe to the U.S. East Coast and Gulf Coast, Canada and Mexico, the hike will be $150 per 20-foot container and $200 per 40-foot container. From the Mediterranean to the U.S. East Coast and Gulf Coast, the increase will be $200 per 20-foot container and $300 per 40-foot container.
  • From North Europe to Colombia, Chile, Ecuador and Peru, Maersk Line will hike rates by $100 per 20-foot container and $200 per 40-foot and 45-foot container.
  • Maersk Line will also hike rates from Europe to the U.S. From the Mediterranean to the U.S., and from North Europe to the U.S. East Coast and Gulf Coast, the hike will be $150 per 20-foot container and $200 per 40-foot, 40-foot high-cube and 45-foot container. From North Europe to the U.S. West Coast, the hike will be $300 per 20-foot container and $400 per 40-foot, 40-foot high-cube and 45-foot container.

Asia-Europe

On the trade from Asia to Europe, two container lines have planned rate hikes for Oct. 1:

  • CMA CGM will hike rates from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka to North Europe, the Mediterranean, Baltic and Black Sea, as well as North Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean by $200 per 20-foot container and $400 per 40-foot container. Additionally, the container line will increase rates from the Persian Gulf to North Europe, the Mediterranean, Baltic and Black Sea, as well as North Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean by $150 per 20-foot container and $250 per 40-foot container.
  • Maersk Line will hike rates from Japan to Europe, excluding Syria, by $200 per 20-foot container and $400 per 40-foot, 40-foot high-cube and 45-foot container. From Japan to Syria, the container line will increase rates by €150 per 20-foot container and €300 per 40-foot, 40-foot high-cube and 45-foot container.

These planned Asia-to-Europe increases follow rate hikes scheduled for Sept. 1 that have apparently failed, as spot container rates from Asia to Europe measured by the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index have been declining recently.

In addition, two carriers have planned rate increases for Oct. 1 on trade from Europe to Asia:

  • CMA CGM will hike rates on its trade from North Europe to the Red Sea and Persian Gulf by $150 per 20-foot container and $250 per 40-foot container.
  • OOCL will increase eastbound rates from Europe to Asia. From North Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and U.K. to Asia, the hike will be $200 per 20-foot container and $300 per 40-foot container. From the Mediterranean to Asia, the hike will be $200 per 20-foot and 40-foot container.

Intra-Asia

Starting Sept. 15, CMA CGM will increase rates on its trade from all Asian ports, excluding Japan, to Persian Gulf ports, by $300 per TEU. Effective Oct. 1, CMA CGM will boost rates from all Japanese ports to Persian Gulf ports by $500 per TEU.

Asia-Australia

Beginning Oct. 1, Mediterranean Shipping Co. will raise rates from Southeast Asia to Australia by $250 per TEU. OOCL will also hike rates from Southeast Asia to Australia by $250 per TEU and $500 per FEU, starting on the same day.
