Egypt Tightens Suez Canal Security

10/15/2013 9:12:42 AM

Egypt has increased security along the Suez Canal after receiving threats that jihadists were planning attacks along the waterway, United Press International reports.

Citing security sources, Asharq al-Awsat, a London-based Arabic newspaper, said the army and police have beefed up their presence along the canal and tightened inspections. Security personnel have erected barbed wire and barriers and set up check points, and soldiers have secured building rooftops overlooking the waterway, according to the newspaper.

Asharq al-Awsat said the extra security measures will remain in effect until the end of the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha. The holiday will end on the evening of Oct. 15.
