OOCL, Hapag-Lloyd, MISC, NYK cancel Asia-Black Sea express service

12/13/2013 10:59:07 AM

HONG KONG's Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has announced that it is cancelling its weekly Asia-Black Sea service together with other alliance partners as demand declines in the slack season.

Also joining the cancellation are Hapag-Lloyd, MISC Berhad and NYK, which jointly ran the service with the Grand Alliance and New World Alliance partners between Asia and the Black Sea/East Mediterranean.

OOCL said the Grand Alliance had decided to suspend the service, adding to the list of cuts in service capacity by major carriers on the Asia-Europe route since cargo volume started to slow in the slack season.

The service had been operated by eight vessels with an average capacity of 5,000 TEU and all eight ships were suspended, said OOCL.

"This service change is in response to the global economic slowdown that has led to reduced customer demand," OOCL said.
