Turkish operator U.N. Ro-Ro İşletmeleri A.Ş. introduced Israel Haifa line which will be working along with Iskenderun-Damietta voyages. The first stopover to Haifa Terminal commenced with the voyage from Iskenderun departing on 11 January 2014.
As a result of the civil war in Syria, which used to be the main land-bridge between Turkey and the Middle East, this route has gained in strategic and commercial importance.
Israel is hoping that it can market the Haifa-Jordan route not only as a stopgap, but as an economically viable and efficient route that shipping companies will choose regardless of the Syrian conflict.
