CONTAINER Trades Statistics data reveal that Asia-Europe volumes declined 7.4 per cent in February, traditionally the slowest month, to 859,900 TEU after an 8.5 per cent year-on-year increase to 1.4 million TEU in January.
The timing of Chinese New Year meant the rush to get volumes out before the factory shutdown boosted January's numbers and depressed February's. But year-to-date - January and February - volumes were two per cent up on 2013 at 2.3 million TEU.
Asia to north Europe February volumes were 5.5 per cent down to 566,392 TEU year on year, but ahead 2.4 per cent year-to-date to 1.5 million TEU. February's West Med-North Africa volume displayed the same pattern, down 11.4 per cent in February to 38,898 TEU, but up 2.2 per cent year to date.
But the year-to-date gain on the East Med-Black Sea was only 0.3pc while the February decline was 10.1 per cent to 395,388 TEU.
