AN ILLEGAL consignment of 2,400 rat snakes bound for Hong Kong commercial kitchens has been uncovered by workers at an airport cargo complex in Penang.
The snakes are a protected species believed to have been sent by smugglers in Thailand via Malaysia, AP reports.
It is suspected the snakes, had they not been found, would have wound up on the menu in restaurants where they enjoy an appreciative large market.
The snakes were discovered at the Bayan Lepas International Airport after workers heard hissing and notified authorities, who took a closer look.
The snakes are believed to be worth about US$67,797. They were found tied up in plastic sacks inside 86 crates. Their fate remains unknown.
