Japan Airlines will raise air cargo rates for domestic routes by a uniform 10 percent from April to pass on higher jet fuel costs.
It is JAL’s first such hike in 26 years.
The airline has effectively hiked air cargo rates on international routes in line with its adjustment system, under which rates are made to factor in fluctuations in fuel costs in the market.
The airline said although fierce competition from trucking firms had previously dissuaded JAL from transferring cost increases to domestic air cargo rates, it has decided to conduct the hike in view of surging fuel costs that have flirted with all-time highs.
