A huge airport under construction in Qatar will cost US$9 billion and open for traffic in 2010.
Abdul Aziz al-Nuaimi, head of Qatar’s civil aviation authority, said the cost has gone up from the budgeted $5 billion to $9 billion.
He said the higher cost was due to global inflation and the fact that the three phases of development of the airport have been merged into one.
Nuaimi said the airport would be able to handle 24 million passengers a year when it opens in 2010. It will have a cargo terminal with a capacity of 750,000 metric tonnes a year.
US engineering giant Bechtel is building the airport. Construction of the facility, covering a site of about 2,000 hectares, began in 2005.
Nuaimi denied Qatar aimed to rival Dubai, a booming regional hub in the neighbouring United Arab Emirates.
