Maersk extending BAF formula to Europe trades

9/4/2008 10:14:19 AM

Maersk Line will next month roll out its new method for calculating fuel surcharges to the Far East/Europe, intra Europe, and Europe/Middle East and South Asia trades.

The Danish carrier began phasing in the new fuel system in March with all trades scheduled to be online by Jan. 1, except for the Asia/Middle East, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka trade, which will begin July 1, 2009.

Maersk said the formula builds on elements such as fuel consumption, transit time and trade imbalances, and adjusts to changing fuel prices on either a monthly or quarterly basis according to the trade. The formula is applied on a revenue neutral basis, meaning that any reduction or increase in BAF will be offset by an equivalent adjustment in the base rate.

Effective Oct. 1, Maersk's BAFs for the following trades will become:

Far East/Europe:

   • Westbound: $720 per TEU, $1,440 per FEU

   • Eastbound: $240 per TEU, $480 per FEU

North Europe to Mediterranean and Black Sea (both directions):

   • 270 euros per TEU.

   • 540 euros per FEU.

   • $400 per TEU (to and from Israel).

   • $800 per FEU (to and from Israel).

   • £215 per TEU (to and from United Kingdom).

   • £430 per FEU (to and from U.K.)

Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea to Mediterranean and Black Sea (intra Med and intra Black Sea):

   • 135 euros per TEU

   • 270 euros per FEU

   • $200 per TEU (to and from Israel)

   • $400 per TEU (to and from Israel)

North Europe to North Europe:

   • 135 euros per TEU.

   • 270 euros per FEU.

   • £110 per TEU (to and from U.K.).

   • £220 per FEU (to and from U.K.).

Europe/Middle East and South Asia (eastbound and westbound):

All the above mentioned BAF are for both dry and refrigerated containers and will be revised on a monthly basis.
