Britain’s freight industry is expected to benefit from the newly-upgraded GBP8.9 billion West Coast main line, which runs from London to Glasgow serving destinations including Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool and which handles an estimated 40 per cent of the country’s rail freight.
The upgrade sees journey times fall by up to 30 per cent and in addition, there will be a 45 per cent increase in long distance train services on the line.
The route is one of the most intensively used lines in Europe.
