Jetstar doubles its low fare services between Darwin and Sydney

7/23/2009 9:51:45 AM

Australia’s low fares airline Jetstar continues to build capacity through its ground breaking Darwin flying hub with confirmation it will double its service frequency between Sydney and Darwin by October.

Jetstar currently operates five daylight weekly return A320 services between Sydney and Darwin which provides timely daily connections onto Singapore or Bali and up to five times weekly to Ho Chi Minh City.

The carrier’s Sydney-Darwin service will increase to a daily offering from 18 September 2009 and continues to operate in daylight hours in both directions between Darwin and Sydney.

Jetstar also plans to introduce an additional three weekly return services on the Sydney-Darwin route to operate ‘back of clock’ and commence in late October taking the total to 10 weekly services.

This will further boost Jetstar’s domestic seat capacity in Darwin by an extra 1770 weekly seats.

Jetstar Chief Executive Officer Bruce Buchanan said the announced fresh capacity boost reinforced its ongoing commitment and high levels of investment in the long term development of its Darwin flying hub.

“Over the past financial year Jetstar has grown its overall flying capacity into and from Darwin by 56 per cent with our total weekly services more than doubling into our Top End hub,” Mr Buchanan said.

“Our additional Sydney-Darwin services not only provide more domestic flight access into and from Darwin but importantly offer through Jetstar a new level of daily access from Sydney that will feed more traffic into our Near Asian network via our Darwin flying hub.

“With Jetstar’s own Darwin passenger volumes having grown by 65 per cent over the past year, our vision for a significant flying hub offering effective and seamless connections into Asia continues to come to fruition.”

Mr Buchanan said the airline’s latest capacity growth for its Darwin hub did not ignore the firm position taken to retain a long term operational cost structure in Darwin that allows it to best leverage its future hub services.

“We remain committed to further growing our Darwin flying hub despite the existing position of Darwin International Airport to place on hold its proposed $60 million terminal and airport infrastructure upgrade project,” Mr Buchanan said.

Jetstar’s base international schedule presently serves the Asian markets of Singapore (double daily – 14 times weekly), Bali (daily) and Ho Chi Minh City (up to 5 times weekly) from Darwin International Airport.

Existing Jetstar domestic operations to Darwin include a base schedule supporting direct flights to Melbourne (double daily – 14 times weekly), Brisbane (13 times weekly), Cairns (daily), Sydney (5 times weekly) and Adelaide (4 times weekly).

The schedule for the additional 3 times per week late evening Sydney-Darwin return service will soon be published.
