AFGHAN importers have asked the Pakistan Railways (PR) to make available more rail cars for the Afghan transit trade because delays are increasing, reports the Karachi News.
Trade sources said the PR has failed to meet demand of local importers for Afghanistan-bound cargo. They have petitioned Pakistan Railways officials for more capacity out of Karachi's two ports.
Supply of Afghan transit goods almost came to a halt in August 2005 because of a rail car shortage, and a large quantity of containers were stuck on the docks.
"Afghan importers have also demanded an increased number of railway wagons as the current number is not enough to fill demand," said a source close to the railway and customs agents.
"There is a strong possibility that the PR will call a meeting to review the situation as the situation may encourage Afghan importers to shift transit consignments to Iran, which would deprive the PR of huge revenues," he said
