FEDEX Express has set up a new US$20 million station in the Greater Tokyo area. The 19,000-square-metre facility is the company's largest station in the Asia-Pacific region.
It houses more than 400 employees and is equipped with technology capable of sorting 6,000 packages per hour. What's more the facility integrates a number of FedEx stations currently located around the metropolis.
"The new facility will play a pivotal role in supporting the manufacturing and export industry in Japan, which is demanding faster and more reliable business solutions to help companies compete in global markets," said David Cunningham, president of FedEx Express Asia Pacific. "There is an increasing demand for international express transportation not just in the greater Tokyo area, but in all of Japan."
The new facility is partly intended to dramatically improve the company's efficiency in providing pick-up, delivery, and customs clearance services as it will house both the import and export customs clearance departments that before were housed at Narita Airport, a company statement explained.
Stations that will relocate to this new facility include Ariake and Konan stations, part of the Setagaya station, and a section of the import warehouse function at the Narita Airport. So far, integration of the Konan station has begun, while the other stations will move to this new facility through July 2007.
