Major Ocean Carriers Set India Freight Rate Increases

4/20/2012 10:32:52 AM

Several major container carriers plan to implement general rate increases on trades to and from the Indian Subcontinent that are slated to take effect in May.

Evergreen Line will push its rates up by $400 per 20-foot and $800 per 40-foot container on cargo from ports in the Subcontinent to North Europe and the Mediterranean, starting May 1. The Taiwan- based carrier will also impose a $300 TEU/$600 per FEU hike on eastbound shipments from North Europe and the Mediterranean to the Subcontinent, effective May 1.

Maersk Line said it will raise rates by $250 per TEU and $400 per FEU on cargo from India to Kenya and Tanzania, effective May 1. The carrier will also increase rates by $50 per TEU and $100 per FEU on shipments moving from India to destinations in the Indian Ocean Islands, also starting May 1.

Hapag-Lloyd will apply a $100 per TEU rate increase on westbound cargo shipped from India’s west coast ports of Nhava Sheva (Jawaharlal Nehru) and Mundra to North Europe and the Mediterranean, effective May 15.

OOCL will seek a $200 per container GRI on eastbound shipments from North Europe to Asia, starting May 15.

Meanwhile, United Arab Shipping Company said it will apply a “fuel compensation surcharge” on westbound trades from Asia to North Europe and the Mediterranean to offset rising bunker costs. Starting May 1, the planned surcharge will be $82 per 20-foot dry container and $90 per 20-foot reefer container.
