Qatar Airways has ordered two Boeing 777 Freighters, adding to its existing order for fourteen 777-300ERs and six 777-200LRs.
Delivery of the first 777 Freighter has been timed to coincide with opening of Doha's new international airport in 2009.
According to CEO Akbar Al Baker, while the cornerstone of Qatar Airways’ success has been focused on passengers, the carrier also recognises the value of the 777 Freighter in the growing regional freight market.
The Middle East has experienced continued strong air cargo growth, and accounts for 5.8% of the world's tonnage into, out of, and within the region.
Deliveries of the carrier’s 22 Boeing 777s will begin in November 2007, with deliveries extending out to mid-2010.
Doha's new international airport is scheduled to open in mid-2009 and will provide world-class freight facilities to accommodate up to 750,000 tonnes of cargo annually with additional capability planned for later development.
