Lufthansa Cargo is expanding its Munich base into a security hub, further developing the Frankfurt security hub into a showcase station for new security technologies, and equipping its station in Johannesburg with modern security technology.
New security measures are to be introduced in the cargo complexes at Munich and Frankfurt Airports from January 2007. Lufthansa Cargo is equipping both centres with a combination of x-ray and explosives detection systems.
According to Karl-Heinz Koepfle, Lufthansa Cargo board member, operations, said: “Munich and Frankfurt will serve as model stations showcasing new technologies in airfreight security. We are pursuing entirely new paths in close co-operation with manufacturers of security technology.”
He added that the carrier’s measures far exceed legal requirements, and are setting security norms in the air cargo industry.
Lufthansa Cargo is also tightening security precautions in Johannesburg. Aside from structural conversion work at the South African station, additional alarm systems and a new security service will significantly improve the overall security situation.
According to the AEA, FFI and TAPA, cargo crime levels in and around the O.R. Tambo International Airport (formerly the Johannesburg International Airport) are “unacceptably high”.
Conversion work in Johannesburg and implementation of new security technologies in Munich and Frankfurt will begin this year, and are due to be completed by summer 2007.
