SHANGHAI's Pudong International Airport has started constructing what will eventually become mainland China's largest air cargo terminal in an effort to keep pace with anticipate growth in trade volumes.
This comes amid projections that Pudong will handle the third largest quantity of airfreight worldwide by 2008, Xinhua News Agency reports, adding that the new facility will be inside the airport's west cargo handling area.
Construction of the new airfreight terminal is set for completion by the end of 2007, with operations expected to commence early the following year.
Today, the largest air cargo terminal in China is Super Terminal 1 at the Hong Kong International Airport. This facility has an annual capacity of 2.6 million tons, making it the world's largest air cargo handling facility.
