New Container Terminal Opens in Cambodia

Cambodia has opened a new container terminal near the capital Phnom Penh.   The Phnom Penh Autonomous Port is located along the Mekong River in Kean Svay district, about 30 kilometers east of Phnom Penh, and offers 120,000 20-foot-equivalent units of capacity per annum.   Cambodia’s low land and labor costs are increasingly proving attractive to OEMs and textile producers priced out of China by rising costs. But infrastructure has been a challenge in the under-developed South East Asian country.   The new port was constructed by Shanghai Construction (Group) General Company with financial assistance from the Chinese government. It offers connections via the Mekong River to mainline container trades through Cai Mep port in Vietnam as well as direct intra-Asia connections via the East Sea.   The Journal of Commerce
