CMA CGM has issued a response to media reports that have drawn a parallel between the damage suffered by the MSC Napoli last week and previous damage caused by an incident six years ago.
The CMA CGM Normandie underwent structural repairs after running aground in the Strait of Malacca in 2001.
“The CMA CGM Normandie, renamed MSC Napoli, was in a perfect state of repair when sold to the company ZODIAC in 2002,” says CMA CGM.
The MSC Napoli suffered damage in bad weather last week, and was deliberately run aground to avoid the risk of sinking in deep waters.
“The parallel drawn by some between the damage suffered by the MSC Napoli off the Coast of Devon and the grounding of the vessel in 2001 is technically unfounded,” states CMA CGM.
The MSC Napoli remains grounded just off the Devon, UK coast, with around 200 containers having slid off the deck, some being washed up on local beaches.
With broken containers displaying their contents to all and sundry on the beaches, a certain amount of unofficial salvaging activities have taken place.
Opportunistic scavengers have made off with BMW motorcycles, car parts, cosmetics and barrels of wine, amongst other items. Some of these looted items are reported to have surfaced on eBay.
