JAPANESE multi-modal transport company MOL is setting up a seafarer cadet programme, starting in June, at the Odessa National Maritime Academy in the Ukraine to train crew to serve MOL's expanding fleet.
MOL plans to have 900 vessels in service by March 2010. To help meet rising demand for seafarers associated with the fleet expansion, MOL operates its own manning companies and crew training centres around the world. MOL currently recruits cadets from the Philippines, India, Croatia, Montenegro, China, Vietnam, Indonesia and Russia.
The new cadet programme will feature a range of instruction with mainly practical onboard training to qualify 20 students a year. MOL said in a statement that the company started employing Ukrainian seafarers in 2005.
In October 2006, the MOL Group ship management company MO Ship Management Co. opened a liaison office in Odessa. The office developed a tie-up with the Odessa National Maritime Academy to introduce the programme at the academy to ensure a stable source of Ukrainian seafarers.
