Ocean Carrier Rate Revision Roundup for Dec. 16

Major container lines have announced planned rate increases for a variety of trades, as detailed below, slated to take effect in December and January.

Trans-Pacific

Cosco Container Lines plans to raise rates on shipments from the Far East and Indian subcontinent to the U.S.:

  • Starting Dec. 20, the hike will be $160 per 20-foot container, $200 per 40-foot container, $225 per 40-foot high-cube container and $253 per 45-foot container.
  • Beginning Jan. 15, the increase will be $240 per 20-foot container, $300 per 40-foot container, $338 per 40-foot high-cube container and $380 per 45-foot container.

Cosco also intends to boost rates on its eastbound trade from the Far East and Indian subcontinent to Canada:

  • Effective Jan. 1, the increase will be $320 per 20-foot container, $400 per 40-foot container, $450 per 40-foot high-cube container and $506 per 45-foot container.
  • Starting Jan. 15, the hike will be $240 per 20-foot container, $300 per 40-foot container, $338 per 40-foot high-cube container and $380 per 45-foot container.

Effective Jan. 15, Hapag-Lloyd hopes to increase rates on its trade from the Indian subcontinent to the east and west coasts and inland locations of the U.S. and Canada by $220 per 20-foot container, $275 per 40-foot container and $310 per 40-foot high-cube container.

Asia-North America

Hapag-Lloyd intends to raise rates on its trade from Egypt to the U.S. East Coast by $75 per TEU, starting Jan. 16.

In the opposite direction, Maersk Line has announced a planned rate increase of $80 per 20-foot container, $100 per 40-foot container and $125 per 45-foot container on cargo from the U.S. to the Far East, effective Jan. 1.

Asia-Latin America

Beginning Jan. 1, Cosco hopes to implement two rate increases:

  • From the Far East and Indian subcontinent to Panama, Venezuela, Colombia, Costa Rica and Cuba, the hike will be $700 per 20-foot container and $1,000 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container.
  • From the Far East to South America’s west coast and Mexico, the increase will be $600 per 20-foot container and $1,200 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container.

Hapag-Lloyd also hopes to implement three rate increases on Jan. 1:

  • From the Far East to the Caribbean, Central America’s east coast and Panama, the increase will be $700 per 20-foot container and $1,000 per 40-foot container on its trade.
  • From the Far East to Mexico, Central America’s west coast and South America’s west coast, the hike will be $600 per TEU.
  • From the Far East, Indian subcontinent and Middle East to the east coast of South America, the hike will be $650 per TEU.

Additionally, on the same date, Maersk aims to implement a rate increase of $700 per 20-foot container and $1,000 per 40-foot container on its trade from the Far East to the Dominican Republic; Haiti; Jamaica; Venezuela; Trinidad and Tobago; Panama; Puerto Rico; and Santa Marta, Barranquilla and Cartagena, Colombia, as well as a rate hike of $600 per 20-foot container and $1,200 per 40-foot container on its trade from the Far East to Chile; Ecuador; Mexico; Peru; Costa Rica; El Salvador; Guatemala; Honduras; Nicaragua; Bolivia; and Buenaventura, Colombia.

Asia-Europe

Hapag-Lloyd plans to increase rates on its trade from Japan to Europe by $750 per TEU, effective Jan. 15. On the same date, the container line also hopes to boost rates on westbound cargo from the Indian subcontinent, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to Europe by $400 per TEU.

Asia-Africa

Maersk has scheduled a rate increase of $150 per 20-foot container and $300 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container on its trade from the Far East to West Africa, effective Dec. 15.

The container line also intends to implement a rate hike on its trade from the Middle East to West Africa:

  • For shipments from Pakistan to Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, the hike will be $300 per 20-foot container and $600 per 40-foot container, effective Dec. 15.
  • For cargo from Pakistan to Tanzania, the increase will be $100 per 20-foot container and $200 per 40-foot container, starting Dec. 15.
  • For shipments from the United Arab Emirates to Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, the hike will be $175 per 20-foot container and $350 per 40-foot container, beginning Jan. 1.
  • For cargo from India to Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, the increase will be $250 per 20-foot container and $500 per 40-foot container, effective Jan. 1.

Cosco intends to hike rates on shipments from the Far East to South Africa by $300 per TEU, starting Dec. 16.

Maersk aims to implement a rate hike of $200 per 20-foot container and $400 per 40-foot container on its trade from the Far East to East Africa, starting Jan. 1. The container line also hopes to increase rates on shipments from the Far East to Southern Africa by $200 per 20-foot container and $400 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container, effective Jan. 7.

Asia-Australia

Hapag-Lloyd aims to increase rates on cargo from Northeast Asia to Australia by $400 per TEU, starting Jan. 7.

Maersk hopes to implement a rate hike of $400 per 20-foot container and $800 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container on shipments from the Far East to Australia, starting Jan. 7. The carrier also plans to implement a rate increase of $200 per 20-foot container and $400 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container on its trade from the Far East to Australia, effective Jan. 15.

Intra-Asia

Hapag-Lloyd has scheduled a rate increase of $300 per TEU on its trade from East Asia, excluding Japan, to the Persian Gulf, effective Jan. 1.

Latin America-Europe

Hapag-Lloyd hopes to implement a rate increase in the trade from South America’s west coast to North Europe by $500 per 20-foot and 40-foot container, starting Jan. 1. On the same date, the carrier also intends to hike rates on shipments from Central America and the Caribbean to North Europe by $100 per 20-foot container, $200 per 40-foot container and $250 per refrigerated container.

Other

Maersk hopes to hike rates on it trade from Samoa, Tonga and the Cook Islands to and from all world ports, excluding Sudan, Syria, Cuba, the U.S., Guam, Colombia and Puerto Rico, by $1,000 per 20-foot container and $2,000 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container, starting Dec. 15. On the same date, the container line also hopes to increase rates on shipments from Samoa, Tonga and the Cook Islands to and from Sudan, Syria and Cuba by €740 per 20-foot container and €1,475 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container. Furthermore, beginning Jan. 4, Maersk aims to boost rates on cargo from Samoa, Tonga and the Cook Islands to and from the U.S., Guam, Colombia and Puerto Rico by $1,000 per 20-foot container and $2,000 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container.
