Port of Dunkirk posts record 12pc rise to 292,000 TEU in 2013

1/22/2014 9:36:31 AM

THE Port of Dunkirk posted a record 12 per cent year on year increase in container volume to 292,000 TEU in 2013, attributed to the opening of new short sea shipping lines and a perishables boom.

Christine Cabau-Woehrel, director of Grand Port Maritime de Dunkerque (GPMD), said another highlight was a record volume of perishable cargo with a rise of 25 per cent to 500,000 tonnes led by citrus fruit.

The port also announced that the Del Monte group had selected Dunkirk as the import gateway for its Cameroon-origin banana shipments transported by CMA CGM's West Africa service.

The objective for container traffic in 2014 is 320,000 TEU with the prospect of capturing more of the deep-sea trade, Maersk being poised to begin direct calls at Dunkirk from Asia, said Ms Cabau-Woehrel.

Cross-channel ro-ro traffic declined 5.6 per cent to 12.3 million tonnes year on year. However, 2012 had been marked by a very strong start to the year in the wake of Calais-based ferry operator SeaFrance ceasing operations at the end of 2011, which saw some of its traffic temporarily transferred to Dunkirk.
