DP World intends to have the first phase of construction for the Vallarpadam International Container Transshipment Terminal in India completed by April 2009.
The terminal will handle one million TEU during the first phase that is expected to cost US$200 million, a report by The Hindu online said.
DP World, the container terminal operator of the Cochin Port Trust, is now seeking approval from port authorities for its development plan that aims to relieve congestion at the port.
The report claimed that senior port officials expect the land development work to begin soon after the design for the terminal, wharves and handling yards have been examined by an expert committee.
Work on rail connectivity from Edappally and road connectivity from Kalamassery to the project site is due to start by April.
The report added that the development work is intended to turn the port into a leading gateway to southern India and provide an alternative transshipment route to Sri Lanka and Singapore.
