Shenzhen to spend US$3 billion to add 6.3m TEU capacity

5/2/2007 9:23:10 AM

AUTHORITIES in Shenzhen plan to invest a total of CNY23.2 billion (US$3 billion) in the next few years to build 11 new berths for containers, raising the existing capacity of ports in the mainland China city by 6.3 million TEU, Xinhua reports.

According to the newly updated port development plan by municipal authorities, the Yantian deepwater port area will have a total of 30 container berths with a capacity of 18 million TEU. In the near future, three berths will be added to Yantian's western port area, raising the capacity to 1.7 million TEU. The plan calls for the eastern port area to have nine berths and a capacity of 6.64 million TEU.

The Dachanwan port area will have 15 large and seven medium-sized container berths. The phased three-port development project will extend the quay length by 1,200 metres and the back up land area by 1.2 square kilometres. Its barge terminal will also be expanded to cater to rising demand to transport containers by river.
