Grand Alliance member carriers Hapag-Lloyd, NYK, and OOCL plan to add a direct call at Vietnam’s Cai Mep deepwater port to their South China Sea Japan Express starting in May.
The alliance partners will deploy eight vessels with capacities of 6,000 20-foot-equivalnet units on the SCX service, compared to the seven 6,000-TEU ships that are currently on the service.
The new direct call follows the establishment of a number of direct services from Cai Mep to the U.S. West Coast since its harbor was dredged deep enough last spring to accommodate deep-sea vessels.
The Grand Alliance previously added a direct call at Cai Mep to its Asia East Coast Express all-water service in January.
The port rotation of the revised SCX will be as follows: Cai Mep, Laem Chabang, Singapore, Kobe, Nagoya, Tokyo, Sendai, Los Angeles, Oakland, Tokyo, Nagoya, Kobe, Kaohsiung, Shekou and back to Cai Mep.
