Hapag-Lloyd, Cosco, Zim, Evergreen Hike India Rates

6/23/2010 9:56:08 AM

Major ocean carriers operating to and from India plan to increase rates on key trade lanes, starting in early July.

Hapag-Lloyd will apply a peak-season surcharge for all shipments from the Indian subcontinent and East Asia (excluding Japan) to North Europe and the Mediterranean.

Starting July 1, the surcharge will be $350 per 20-foot equivalent unit and $500 per 40-foot equivalent unit.

The German carrier also plans to increase its peak-season surcharge imposed earlier on the trades from East Asia (excluding Japan) and Oceania to the Indian subcontinent, effective July 1. The new surcharge will be $250 per TEU, up from the current $150 per TEU.

Cosco Container Lines will boost rates on the westbound trades from the Indian subcontinent to North Europe with a peak-season surcharge of $200 per TEU, effective July 15.

Zim Integrated Shipping Services will seek a new general rate increase for all cargo moving from Asia and the Indian subcontinent to ports in the Mediterranean, Israel, Black Sea and North Europe. The GRI will be $400 per TEU, slated to take effect on August 1.

The increase comes on top of Zim’s previously announced peak-season surcharge of $175 per TEU and $350 per FEU on the same route, which will take effect on July 1.

Taiwan-based Evergreen Line also plans to apply a peak-season surcharge on the westbound trades. The surcharge is expected to be $300 per TEU and $600 per FEU as of July 18.
