With the market share of import- export container throughput making up over 65% of those in the ports of southern provinces and over 42% nationwide, the receipt/delivery and vessel dispatch activities at Cat Lai port have played an important role in the import - export trade of the Southern provinces and the national economy.
Cat Lai port is the biggest and most modern container port in Vietnam with the state - of - art CY and shipside handling equipment which can be compared to those in the ports of the region and the world.
Cat Lai port has been equipped with 13 Panamax quayside gantry cranes made by Kranbau Eberswalde - K.E (Germany), two fixed quayside Liebherr cranes, two mobile Liebherr cranes, 10 RTG Kalmar cranes 6+1 wide, one over five high, 21 RTG Mijack cranes 3+1 wide, one over four high, 21 reach stackers, 10 forklifts, 140 trailers. Especially, since June 22 2008, the new TOPX terminal operating system has gone live. This is an advanced system provided by Realtime Business Solutions (RBS), an Australian-based company.
This system allows managing and updating container location on the real time basis, shortening the time for moving the import-laden containers to the customs inspection area as well as the container receipt / delivery time. TOPX is connected with the MDTs on the handling equipment; the new system can optimize the discharging/ loading plan, CY plan and maximize the operation of the equipment
Kalmar cranes 6+1 wide
As per SNP’s plan, in the time to come, six brand new RTG 6+1, two K.E quayside gantry cranes and 30 tractors will be operational at Cat Lai port to enhance the handling capability.
Additionally, the development of the depots, ICDs and new berth has all so been focused. The new 62,000 square metre Depot next to Cat Lai port has been under the construction and will be put into operation. SNP has completed the ground leveling at Long Binh ICD and it can store empty containers in September 2008. Long Binh will officially start its operation in the first quarter of 2009.
There are six existing berths with 973 metres in length in Cat Lai up to the present time. The new 216-metre berth (B7) has been being constructed promptly so that it can be put into operation in October 2008.
Tan Cang - Cai Mep deep-sea port – phase 1 with 300-metre berth, which will be able to accommodate the 6,000 TEU vessels, has been built since January 2007 and will be completed in August 2008. This terminal will start work in December 2008 being the first deep-sea port operational in Vietnam.
SNP is making its best efforts to dispatch the vessel quickly as well as to enhance the service quality. Cat Lai port is expected to reach the container throughput of 2.2 million TEUs in 2008.
