Congestion dogs two Indian ports

Two major Indian ports, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Mumbai, the country's largest port, and Chennai in the south, are grappling with severe congestion. Heavy monsoon rains and the damage to cranes at the JNPT terminals is choking traffic at the port, leading to long ship turnaround times and container pile-ups. The Chennai congestion chaos is at two terminals operated by DP World and PSA International, which is forcing many lines to look for alternate destinations. Chennai feeder operators have imposed a US$65 levy per 20-ft container because of the congestion while shipping lines have announced a $75 per TEU levy.   Cargonews Asia
