Hapag-Lloyd Ends Service to Congested India Port

Hapag-Lloyd will discontinue calling at congested Nhava Sheva (Jawaharlal Nehru Port), India’s largest container gateway, and instead will call on Mundra, a privately owned port.   The German carrier’s change to its Asia-Black Sea Express Service, connecting the Indian Subcontinent, China and the Far East, takes effect mid-October. The Zim Kingston will call on Mundra Oct. 24, and the last ABX vessel to call Nhava Sheva will be the Zim Dalian, arriving Oct. 19   The revised port coverage will be: Mundra, Colombo, Port Kelang, Da Chan Bay, Ningbo, Shanghai and Busan.   In recent months, major ocean carriers covering the trades to and from India have been forced to reroute vessels to Mundra amid increasing congestion and operational problems at Nehru.   Mundra, India’s largest privately owned cargo hub,  has two container facilities: Mundra International Container Terminal operated by DP World; and Adani Container Terminal operated by port developer Adani Group.   The Journal of Commerce Online
